Computer Navigation in Hip & Knee Replacement

Hip & Knee Replacement

Northern California Joint Replacement Surgery

Precision is of the utmost importance in surgery, especially in complex joint replacement operations that require a high level of skill. At Muir Orthopaedic Specialists (MOS), we utilize sophisticated technology to perform computer aided surgeries (CAS). These state-of-the-art computers help guide surgeons during hip and knee joint replacement surgeries, resulting in safer and more accurate operations.

All knee and hip replacements at MOS are done with computer guidance. We have more than 10 years of experience performing surgeries with this technology. CAS has allowed us to further customize procedures to best match an individual patient’s anatomy.

CAS vs. Robotic Surgery

CAS is not the same as robotic surgery. A robotic procedure is one where the surgeon guides a surgical machine to perform a procedure. Conversely, CAS only provides the surgeon with information so that they can perform the operation with their own hands.

Robotic surgeries often use computer assistance, but a CAS does not use robotic surgical systems. Not all procedures are good candidates for robotic surgery. CAS allows surgeons the freedom to perform operations with detailed information about the surgical area and the patient’s anatomy.

Risks & Benefits of CAS

At this point in time, there are very few risks associated with CAS. The surgeon is still performing the operation with their own hands, the main difference is that they now have more detailed information to work with. If there is an error when typing information into the computer, then it could have an adverse effect on the procedure. This is rare, and at MOS our surgeons and staff carefully review all information.

There are many benefits to CAS, including:

  • Improved visualization
  • Improved diagnostic capabilities
  • Operations customized for each patient
  • More detailed information about the surgical area
