Dr. Matthew Pecci discussing the symptoms of a concussion, including the significance of balance issues.
A concussion is a global brain dysfunction and as such it can cause a wide variety of physical symptoms. Headache and dizziness are the most commonly reported symptoms. Other symptoms include fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, ringing in the ears and mood changes. Also, it is widely accepted that balance dysfunction can be an indicator of concussion, especially within the first week of symptoms. There are many ways for your doctor or athletic trainer to screen for balance dysfunction.
At Muir Orthopaedic Specialists, we use sensitive equipment to test balance. Most often balance issues resolve along the same timeline as other concussion symptoms. Occasionally balance issues may linger and may require specialized therapy to aid in recovery.
