What is Achilles tendonitis and how is it treated?

Dr. Murali Moorthy, Sports Medicine, and Orthopedic Specialist at Muir Orthopaedic Specialists, discusses what Achilles tendonitis is and how it is treated.

Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation or abnormal scarring to the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue at the back of the lower leg that attaches the calf muscle to the heel.

This injury usually occurs from repetitive stress with running or jumping. If you experience persistent pain at this area, it is time to see your physician to control the symptoms so you can return to your previous activities.

Non-operative methods may include a period of rest or immobilization prior to starting physical therapy exercises, which involve gentle stretches and specialized strengthening exercises.
