Dr. Charles Preston, Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Specialist at Muir Orthopaedic Specialists, discusses the what the importance of playing multiple sports disciplines are for high school athletes.
Question: How important is it to play multiple sports?
Answer:From an orthopedic point of view, I recommend participation in multiple sports, at least until skelatally mature. For most, this is until they are a sophomore in high school. This allows the body to mature in a more balance manner with a variety of movement patterns that come from playing multiple sports. This may help eliminate some of the more common overuse injuries that we see and psychologically for the athlete avoiding burn out.
